This exhibition brings together artists from across India, each contributing a work within the intimate format of 1 x 1 foot. Though identical in scale, these works open up an extraordinary range of ideas, subjects, and expressions, reflecting the diversity and creativity that define contemporary art practice in the country. The chosen format acts as both a limitation and a liberation: a confined space that challenges artists to distill their vision, yet an open ground where individuality flourishes.
At ICA Gallery, we see every artist as equal, and this exhibition reinforces that belief. By presenting all works in the same dimension, we place each artist on the same platform, highlighting that value in art lies not in size or scale, but in imagination, originality, and expression. The exhibition becomes a metaphor for the art world itself—each artist has their own space, unique yet integral, and together they form a collective whole.
“1 x 1 Foot” thus celebrates the balance between equality and individuality, constraint and freedom, intimacy and expansiveness.
